Silver Spring, Maryland -- Continuing its initial response to aid victims of the deadly 6.3 magnitude earthquake that struck Indonesia over the weekend, the Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) is targeting its relief efforts in the hardest-hit region of Bantul, Yogyakarta Province, on the island of Java.

Casualties continue to climb, with the death toll topping more than 5,500 at last report, with at least 10,000 more left with severe or minor injuries.
An estimated 100,000 island residents are homeless.

"In the district of Bantul alone, there were over 3,000 deaths and more than 1,700 injuries. Almost 4,000 homes were destroyed or heavily damaged,"
reports Wendy Brightman, emergency response director for ADRA Indonesia.
"ADRA medical teams are coordinating with local hospitals in Bantul, which have been overwhelmed with victims in need of medical attention."

In addition, ADRA is working with local agencies to provide victims in the region with temporary shelter and non-food items, such as blankets, sleeping mats, clothing, and hygiene kits," Brightman concludes.

ADRA continues to monitor the situation in Bantul and will work to meet victims' needs as they change. Updates will be made available.
