ADRA Responds to Needs of Survivors of Cyclone Larry in Australia

Wahroonga, New South Wales, Australia -- The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) has allocated $50,000 to the response effort after Cyclone Larry devastated regions of northern Queensland in Australia on Monday.

The ADRA office in Australia will provide drinking water and emergency food parcels for affected families in the towns of Innisfail and those further inland on the Atherton Tablelands, and has purchased power generators for use in the relief effort. ADRA will also provide emergency funding to families who are uninsured or do not qualify for government assistance following confirmation by the Department of Community Services.

Cyclone Larry was rated as category five when it pounded the northern Queensland coast, tearing across Innisfail and wreaking havoc in surrounding areas. The cyclone created winds of up to 180 mph, tearing roofs from homes and buildings, and severely damaging vegetation. The damage is estimated to be $1 billion.

There have been no deaths reported from this disaster.
