Silver Spring, Maryland-
The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (ADRA) International has produced an HIV/AIDS awareness kit to encourage groups to observe World AIDS Day on December 1. The program guides are structured for faith-based groups.
The kit includes a World AIDS Day poster, sermon outline, facts, quotes, activity ideas, announcements for newsletters, bulletins, and verbal presentations, and a discussion and activity guide for youth.
For a limited time, ADRA commemorative World AIDS Day red ribbons and "Flickering Flames," a ten-minute video about ADRA's AIDS projects in Malawi, are also available for those doing a World AIDS Day event. To request ADRA's World AIDS Day kit and resources, in the United States call 1-800-424-ADRA (2372). Orders must be placed at least 10 days before your event to allow adequate time for shipping. ADRA's HIV/AIDS awareness kit can also be found on ADRA's web site, www.adra.org. The kit, video and ribbon are all free of charge.
" The active involvement of churches, schools, youth groups, and individuals is an essential element of ADRA's efforts to combat HIV/AIDS around the world," stated Charles Sandefur, president of ADRA International. "The best warrior we have against HIV/AIDS is action by people who learn about the disease and share what they know with others. Information is the most potent weapon against this killer ," continued Sandefur.
According to the United Nations, there are 42 million people worldwide with HIV/AIDS. Every day, nearly 14,000 new HIV cases are added while nearly 8,500 die from AIDS. In North America, nearly one million people are living with HIV, including 10,000 children.
For more than a decade, ADRA has been implementing HIV/AIDS projects such as education about the causes and prevention of HIV/AIDS and teaching adults and children how to care for family and friends who have AIDS. ADRA is present in more than 120 countries providing individual and community development and disaster relief without regard to political or religious association, age or ethnicity. |
